In Bangladesh, over half the population is involved in agriculture and livestock farming, with the poultry sector playing a vital role. Poultry farming supports livelihoods, enhances food security by providing high-quality protein, and drives both rural and urban economic development. It generates employment, boosts economic growth, and helps reduce poverty.
However, current meat and egg production meets only 68% and 64% of national demand, respectively. With rising incomes, population growth, urbanization, and dietary changes, demand is rapidly increasing.
To address these challenges, the government and private sector are collaborating to strengthen the poultry industry. Various initiatives, including policy liberalization, are encouraging private enterprises and NGOs to take proactive steps in advancing the sector.
This review explores the current state of the poultry industry in Bangladesh, the contributions of private enterprises, the marketing of poultry products, and the opportunities for future growth.
Bangladesh’s livestock sector is extensive, comprising 24.23 million cattle, 1.48 million buffalo, 3.53 million sheep, 26.26 million goats, 289.28 million chickens, and 57.75 million ducks. Livestock farming has been a vital component of Bangladesh’s agricultural system for generations, playing a key role in the country’s economy and food security.
In the fiscal year 2012-2013, the livestock sub-sector contributed 1.84% to the national GDP at constant prices. Although slightly lower in FY 2013-2014 at 1.78%, this sector remains crucial in fulfilling the daily animal protein needs of the population.
To further strengthen the livestock industry, a number of initiatives have been implemented. These include the production and distribution of vaccines for poultry and livestock, providing ducklings and chicks at subsidized prices, expanding artificial insemination programs using both diluted and frozen semen to improve livestock varieties, increasing semen production, advancing artificial fetus transfer technology, and controlling diseases such as anthrax, foot-and-mouth disease, and avian influenza.
The aqua sector in Bangladesh currently supplies 60% of the country’s total animal protein demand. The Government of Bangladesh is focused on enhancing fishery resources and production, alleviating poverty through self-employment, improving the socio-economic conditions of fishermen, and meeting the nation’s growing need for animal protein.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock is prioritizing the increased availability of animal protein from fish and seafood while ensuring compliance with international standards. Emphasis is also placed on enhancing food safety in the fisheries sector. Additionally, the government is boosting the competitiveness of Bangladesh’s seafood products in the global market by offering a 10% export subsidy on all seafood exports.
